This
web site is like no other that I know of. It is primarily designed
to be of assistance to the citizens of our community in Union,
SC and reflects both researched facts and opinions not only of
the webmaster, Everett Leigh, but also input and feedback from
the readers.
You
cannot buy or sell anything at this site and will not be bothered
by advertisements. "Civic Activism", as I call it is
my hobby and I believe that a progressive community in a democratic
society is based on compromise based on input and information
on all sides of issues that affect "our little piece of the
world".
If
you are not from Union, I am sure, however, that some of the information
herein will apply to your community, wherever that may be . .
. and maybe you can help make it just a little better.
Years
ago, during a motivational seminar that I attended, the speaker,
Zig Zieglar, stated "You are where you are, because that
is where you want to be!" Frankly the comment upset me because
I was not living the lifestyle that I thought I wanted at the
time. Twenty years later, I now understand that what we do, or
fail to do, always yields the results that our actions
would ultimately dictate.
The
issues on this site will tend to be political in nature as we
help research the issues that you find important. Pages that are
data and present public information and facts will be clearly
marked, as will opinions and conclusions based on information
presented. I extend my invitation to you to present your opinions
(the only exception would be because of liable or foul language)
to allow for others to view, e-mail your opinions on any issue
to opinions@Leigh2000.com and they will
also be posted.
This
is your chance to be heard and believe me, every voice should
count. Those who are silent have to live by the will of the vocal!
Some
issues may tend to be philosophical, which I find both intellectually
and spiritually stimulating, but it is my web site and I welcome
positive stories. The series by Reverend Tim Huckaby, for example,
discuss real life issues and Biblical answers.
In June,
2000, in our little county of 30,000 residents, 16,021 voters
were registered to vote according to the SC Election Commission.
Yet only 1,815 people voted in the Democratic Primary and 442
voted in the Republican Primary for a total of 2,257. Only 14%
actually exercised the right and priviledge to vote during the
primary on June 13, 2000. Apathy by the majority actually allows
a minority of the population to dictate the fate of the rest of
the county!
This web site will be a non-partisan
resource for those who are interested in both the local city and
county governments, as well as school system information. We will
hopefully serve as a resource to make us all a better informed
community. Collectively and as individuals, you do make a difference
and must let your thoughts and opinions be known.
The links on these pages will allow
you to keep in touch with your elected officials on the statewide
level as well as the local level as I will continue to publish
the contact information including e-mail addresses and web links
for the elected officials that represent us all.
Surveys concerning local issues will
continue to be tallied and the results forwarded to the groups
involved and will be published for your review. Question and answer
sections will allow you to bring issues to the table and we will
research and publish the information that affects all of us using,
if necessary, the Freedom of Information Act to access the data.
We in Union County can no longer waste
time talking about why the population in 2000 is basically the
same as it was in 1910 and blame our situation on decisions made
by others in the past. The future starts today and what we do
determines our fate.
